Benzophenone has applications in many fields such as the chemical industry, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. In the chemical industry it is used as a photoinitiator for ultraviolet curing of polymerization reactions. This allows the polymerization process to proceed faster under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. Additionally, it acts as a cross-linking agent which helps strengthen the final product.
In cosmetic products, benzophenone serves as an ultraviolet light absorber because it helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays. It can often be found in sunscreens, lip balms and face creams.
It is also used in various other applications such as analytical chemistry, inks and dyes. It is used as a standard reference material for the calibration of analytical instruments in research laboratories.
